I found this article amusing. When the cubs signed their manager three years ago they passed on reigning NL Manager of the year Joe Girardi and picked Lou Pinella. I said at the time, the right choice for the cubs is Joe Giardi and look who agrees with me. Now most of you won't believe me, but that's ok. Still a good article.

It depends on how you look at it. The better long term manager choice was obviously Girardi, however the Cubs were in "Win Now" mode that offseason. He was going into his second season as a big league manager and his Yankees weren't anything special last year. Pinella gave the Cubs the best chance to win now due to his expierence. So the way I look at it is if you willing to wait a couple years then they should of went with Girardi, but if you wanted to win right away, which many cubs fans like myself wanted, then the obvious choice was Pinella.

ReplyDeleteReally, the Cubs needed to fire Hendry several years ago..
While Hendry has made some mistakes with free agents in the past, but which GM hasnt. He has brought in FA like Ted Lilly (Solid contributer), Jason Marguis (an innings eater and solid 5th starter if you really think about it), and his gamble with Jim Edmonds worked out 2 seasons ago. Where Hendry has succeeded has been in trades and getting something for nothing. He was able to trade Todd Hundley away. He got Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton for Bobby Hill, D-Lee for Hee Seop Choi, Rich Harden for Sean Gallagher, and as able to get Nomar for practically nothing who was still a decent player at the time. While he had a terrible offseason im willing to give him a chance to fix the problem if he doesnt then there is a problem. I know this has nothing to do with the post but I was responding to Fodors comment about firing Hendry
